What a wonderful comment, and how lucky you were to know Holst that way and have the privilege of reading his work while he listened! I always wanted to meet him.
I had the privilege of doing readings with Spencer Holst in the mid- to late 90s. He was suffering from severe breathing problems and could no longer read his work aloud himself, which was his preferred way of presenting his work. Spencer was a longtime friend of my then husband, and he liked my voice and the way I read. I credit you with teaching me how to read a story aloud, as I well remember sitting transfixed in your class, listening to you read. Your cadence, devotion to each word and general appreciation of the work being read stuck with me and now I do my best to imitate you when invited to read words aloud.
My husband and I listened to your wonderful reading of this story. Then I said, βIt seems thereβs a moral here, but Iβm not sure what it is.β And he replied, βStay away from monkeys.β
But seriously, the story is helping me cope with my anxiety over the coming election.
Gotta take the long view of everything. In AA my sponsor would say, "Are you warm, are you safe, have you had enough to eat? Then there is no problem. Look down at your feet and be right where you are." So I try to stay right in the present, and when I get too worried I read archeology sites. Many amazing civilizations have ended, and maybe the democratic experiment is over. I sure hope not, but I'm not in charge of anything but my own behavior, and I'm barely in charge of that!
